{"id":760,"date":"2022-02-04T18:11:25","date_gmt":"2022-02-04T18:11:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jontrinder.com\/blog\/?p=760"},"modified":"2022-02-05T08:04:48","modified_gmt":"2022-02-05T08:04:48","slug":"dx7-ratios-vs-arturia-dx7-v-ratios","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jontrinder.com\/blog\/?p=760","title":{"rendered":"DX7 Ratios vs Arturia DX7 V Ratios"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An small problem highlighted on  youtube and on the Arturia <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.arturia.com\/index.php?PHPSESSID=86a841dc88e088160308f54984bcf085&amp;topic=92604.msg148522#new\">forums<\/a> is  the differnance in how modulation is expressed for the operators is done  differently.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking as an example the factory program of TUB_BEL  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>DX7<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>DX7 V(Arturia)<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>3.5<\/td><td>2.75<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>3.01<\/td><td>3.1<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption>or it could be&#8230;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>DX7<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>DX7 V Arturia<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>3.5<\/td><td>3.166<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The method   of converting from to the other is explained in this post on  the Arturia forums <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.arturia.com\/index.php?PHPSESSID=86a841dc88e088160308f54984bcf085&amp;topic=92604.msg148522#new\">here<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But why the difference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Arturia DX7 V the number of the ratio is expressed  as a percentage of the number on the left. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Whereas on the DX7 the number is expressed as the percentage of an octave.  (I think!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has a slightly confusing  side effect in that an ratio on the DX7  can be represented in more than one set of numbers on the arturia.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally I want to go from real DX7 to Arturia hence wrote an simple  (and ugy application to do the conversion)  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jontrinder.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/dx7app-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"616\" height=\"763\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jontrinder.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/dx7app-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jontrinder.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/dx7app-3.png 616w, https:\/\/www.jontrinder.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/dx7app-3-242x300.png 242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Application to ease the calculations<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to go from Arturia DX7 V to Real DX7<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2 .75  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the left number (freq) = 2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>multiply it by the ratio part (so 2 * .75)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then add it to the left number (the 2)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3 .5  = 2 * .75 +2 is the DX 7 Equivalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arghhhhh you say (I know I did)  how can 3.5 on the DX7 be either 2 27 or 3 1 on the Arturia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OK, so the ratio on the Arturia is expressed as a percentage of the Freq (the number on the left) so lets work that back with the same calculation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example 2 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3 .166 On the Arturia DX7 V<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the left number (freq) = 3 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>multiply it by the ratio part (so 3 x 0.166= 0.499 but we&#8217;ll round it up to 0.5) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then add it to the left number (the 3) = 3.5<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3.5  = 2 * .75 +2 is the DX 7 Equivalent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least I think this is how it works, am I wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An small problem highlighted on youtube and on the Arturia forums is the differnance in how modulation is expressed for the operators is done differently.
